About

A screen utility should be as fast as the tool it replaces.

Black Screen Free started as a complaint. Searching for a simple black screen meant loading a page full of advertising, waiting for a script to decide whether to show the tool, and then being asked to accept cookies — for a page whose entire job is to display one colour.

So this is the opposite of that: one static page, about a kilobyte of markup, and a black stage that paints immediately. Everything else was built the same way.

Principles

Four rules we do not break.

The tool is the page

No hero carousel, no cookie wall, no interstitials. When you open a tool page you get the tool, and everything explanatory sits below it where it cannot slow you down.

Client-side or not at all

Every feature runs in the browser. Uploads are read locally, audio is synthesised live, colour images are drawn on a canvas. Nothing is sent anywhere, which is why there is no privacy policy longer than a page.

Fast is a feature

Static HTML, a few kilobytes of JavaScript, no framework hydration on load and no third-party requests. The black screen paints on first render rather than after a script finishes.

Honest about the platform

Browsers have real limits: iOS restricts fullscreen, Firefox has no wake lock, and a black screen saves nothing on an LCD. Every tool page says so instead of pretending otherwise.

How it is built

Static output, plain JavaScript.

The site is generated ahead of time as static HTML. There is no server runtime, no database and no API to call. Interactivity is written in plain TypeScript where it is needed and nowhere else — the homepage ships a single small module; the tool pages ship one module each.

A service worker caches the pages and scripts after your first visit so every tool works offline, and a web app manifest makes the whole thing installable on a home screen.

What we do not do
  • — No analytics, heatmaps, A/B tests or session recording.
  • — No advertising networks, pop-ups or interstitials.
  • — No accounts, newsletters or email capture.
  • — No uploads: logos and images are processed in your browser.
  • — No dark patterns, fake urgency or “upgrade to remove watermark”.

The privacy page explains exactly what is stored on your device — the short version is one theme preference.

Start with the tool that started it.
