Plain explanations, no marketing. If something is missing, the guides go deeper on OLED battery life, dead pixel testing and iOS fullscreen.
Getting started

What is Black Screen Free?
A free collection of fullscreen screen tools that run entirely in your browser. The main one is a pure #000000 black screen you can open in a single tap, but the site also includes a full colour suite, a dead pixel tester, burn-in and uniformity tests, prank screens, a DVD screensaver, white noise, video call lighting and a solid-colour image exporter.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no signup, no login, no email and no newsletter. Open a page and the tool works immediately.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Black Screen Free is a Progressive Web App. After your first visit the pages and scripts are cached by a service worker, so every tool keeps working with no connection at all — which matters if you are using it as a light source or a bedside clock.
How do I install it on my phone?
On iOS Safari, tap Share then Add to Home Screen. On Android Chrome, tap the menu then Install app. It then opens fullscreen, with no browser chrome, like a native utility.

Why will my iPhone not go fullscreen?
Safari on iOS only allows true fullscreen for video elements. Instead of failing, we open a locked fullscreen overlay that fills the viewport, hides scrolling and hides the page behind it. In practice it feels the same as fullscreen, with the address bar collapsed as far as the platform permits.
Which keyboard shortcuts are supported?
F or Space toggles fullscreen, Escape exits, the arrow keys cycle colours on tools that support a palette, P plays or pauses the dead pixel cycle and G toggles the pixel grid. Every shortcut is ignored while you are typing in an input field.
Can I open a screen on more than one monitor?
Open the page in a second window, drag it to the other display and press F in each window. Browsers only allow one element at a time to be in fullscreen within a single tab, which is a platform rule rather than a limitation of this tool.
How do I stop the screen from dimming?
Use the Keep screen awake toggle, which holds a Screen Wake Lock. That works on Chrome, Edge and most Android browsers, and on Safari from iOS 16.4. Firefox does not support the API yet — raise the device’s screen timeout instead.
Displays and pixel health

Why is pure black better on OLED?
On an OLED or AMOLED panel each pixel produces its own light. A pixel showing #000000 stops drawing current entirely, so it emits no light and consumes no power. A fullscreen black page is therefore both the darkest thing the display can show and the most efficient.
Does a black screen save battery on an LCD?
Barely. LCD, LED and plasma screens light the panel with a separate backlight that stays on regardless of what is displayed. Black pixels block light rather than switch it off, so savings are minimal.
What is OLED burn-in and can this tool prevent it?
Burn-in is uneven ageing of organic pixels caused by static bright content over hundreds of hours. Use the burn-in and uniformity test to detect it, and switch on burn-in protection, which nudges the image a few pixels every 30 seconds so no set of pixels is lit permanently.
How do I know if a pixel is dead or stuck?
Run the dead pixel test fullscreen. A dead pixel stays black on red, green, blue and white. A stuck pixel shows one fixed colour on every screen, usually red, green or blue. A hot pixel stays bright white even on black.
Privacy and data

Do you track anything?
No. There is no analytics package, no advertising script, no social embed and no third-party tracker of any kind. The pages are static HTML and the tools are plain JavaScript running on your device.
What happens to files I upload?
Nothing leaves your device. The DVD screensaver logo and any image you load is read with the browser’s FileReader API and rendered straight to a canvas from local memory. There is no upload request and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
Do you use cookies?
No cookies. The only thing stored locally is your light or dark theme preference, saved in localStorage under a single key, and it never leaves your browser.
Are images I download generated on a server?
No. Colour images are drawn onto a canvas element in your browser and exported with the Blob API. Neither the colour nor the resulting file is ever transmitted.
Using the tools properly

What is the best way to test a new monitor?
Clean the panel, set brightness to maximum and run the dead pixel test through a full cycle. Then run the burn-in and uniformity test on the 5%, 10% and 20% grey fields to check for backlight bleed, mura and tint shifts. Do it inside the return window if you can.
How long should I leave a black screen on?
As long as you like — black pixels do not wear. Combine keep-awake with burn-in protection for overnight use, and use the auto-off timer if you would rather the screen went dark after 30, 60 or 120 minutes.
Can I use these screens for photography?
Yes. The white screen is a soft bounce light, the colour suite gives you an exact fill colour, and the video call lighting presets are tuned for skin tones. Keep device brightness at maximum and move the screen closer before dimming it.
Is it safe to leave a bright static screen on my OLED?
For short periods, yes. For long periods, avoid it. Static bright content is the one thing that genuinely accelerates OLED wear, so prefer the black screen, the Matrix rain or the bouncing DVD logo when a display is going to be left on for hours.
